Israeli-syllabus school set up in Syrian area controlled by armed groups

Businessman Moti Kahana, a former Israeli air force soldier who holds dual Israeli-US citizenships, is the head of the organisation behind the schools. He hopes that the syllabus will entrench a different perspective about Israel and that pupils will go on to study in Israeli universities. “In this way,” Kahana explained, “we hope to change the popular Syrian position towards Israel.”

Amaliah, a humanitarian group that has worked with Syrian refugees in Israel, said that it was “now on the ground working with the Texas National Guard to provide gasoline to power generators in hospitals and private homes, while distributing aid such as food, diapers and bottled water to makeshift shelters around the city.”
The rescue team includes Syrian and Israeli volunteers who met in the Israeli hospitals where Syrian refugees have received medical treatment. “After so many years of working together to help the Syrian people, a bridge was built between Israelis and Syrians, and together we are going to Houston to help our fellow Americans,” the group’s founder, Moti Kahana, said.

Moti Kahana, a Jerusalem-born businessman-philanthropist who lives in Randolph, N.J., has quietly rescued members of Syria’s small Jewish community and helped preserve artifacts from the destroyed Jobar Synagogue in Damascus. But he made headlines for forming the NGO Amaliah, which rescues Syrians from the country’s ongoing civil war. The organization’s name means “God’s work” in Hebrew and Arabic.
